Namibia self-drive guide
Reviewed 2 October 2026. Yes, Namibia can be explored by self-drive. Match the vehicle to the route, check official road information and leave daylight margin. The Namibia Tourism Board self-drive PDF is in its March 2022 document archive; it is general trip-planning material, not a current road report.
Windhoek to Swakopmund
Plan the westbound inter-city drive through the Okahandja and Karibib corridor, verify the mapped route and current notices, and do not rely on this guide for live closures, travel time or fuel availability. Check Roads Authority network information, official notices and the road-conditions page.
Before hiring a car
Ask the rental company in writing which road surfaces and destinations are permitted, what insurance excludes, which roadside assistance is included, and how to report a tyre or mechanical problem. Confirm the spare, jack, tools, fuel plan and recovery contact for your chosen route.
If the car breaks down
- Move off the carriageway only if safe, use hazard lights and keep people away from traffic.
- Call the rental provider with your location, road, direction and vehicle details.
- Follow the provider’s recovery instructions; do not repair a vehicle in a dangerous position.
- For injury or immediate danger, contact the relevant emergency service directly.
Namibia Tour Assist can help coordinate practical travel questions; it is not roadside recovery or an emergency service. Primary planning reference: Namibia Tourism Board self-drive guide (2022 archive).
